The restaurant sector moves at a lightning pace.
It’s so fast, in fact, that it can often feel rather overwhelming. How on earth can a busy restaurateur keep up to date with the latest trends, technology and tastes and maintain a successful business?
This is a similar challenge in most industries, and that’s partly why podcasts have become so popular.
A podcast is essentially a mini radio show that isn’t live, and which can therefore be enjoyed whenever the need strikes.
We’ve picked out six of the best restaurant-related podcasts you need to subscribe to – today. We’ve provided direct links for Apple Podcasts, but you should be able to find them on most other podcast services.
1. Secret Sauce: The Marketing Podcast
Hosted by James Eling, Secret Sauce offers bite-sized podcasts every week which are perfect for quick injections of inspiration. James is upbeat throughout and covers everything from restaurant marketing strategy to the many ways in which restaurateurs can plan for the future. He’ll even broach the subject of failure, which is a refreshingly honest approach.
2. Restaurant Rockstars
Hosted by restaurant veterans, Restaurant Rockstars is a brilliant podcast that digs into financial best practices, customer service techniques and restaurant marketing.
Expect hour-long episodes nearly every week and topics that are bang-on the money in terms of timing and relevancy.
3. Restaurant Unstoppable with Eric Cacciatore
Eric Cacciatore has tirelessly published hundreds of episodes of Restaurant Unstoppable, and somehow still manages to ensure no two are the same.
Smart restaurant tech, marketing, menu optimisation and much more are covered, and he has some brilliant guests each week, too.
The shows are incredibly regular, perfect in length and regularly hit the spot immediately on any current issues, challenges and emerging trends.
4. Radio Cherry Bombe
If you’re looking to gain a different perspective on the food industry, Kerry Diamond, the co-founder of indie magazine Cherry Bombe, has interviewed some of the most creative and influential women in the world of food. Diamond has interviewed everyone from bakers, pastry chefs, cookbook authors, restaurateurs and more. “I love the relaxed vibe of the interview,” says Yoko Inue, Owner and Chef at Melbourne’s Shoku Iku, “I also enjoyed more controversial subjects such as the “me too” movement in the hospitality scene. I especially loved the Super Women, Super Foods miniseries.”
With 200 episodes available for listening, this will be sure to provide you plenty of additional insight.
5. Just Forking Around
If you’re after something a little spicier, Just Forking Around will hit the spot, as the name might suggest.
Unfortunately, the last episode was published in December 2018, but their back catalogue demands exploration.
Previous topics include iconic restaurant spaces, up cycling waste and a wealth of content on how to provide a unique, unforgettable customer experience. Trust us – it’ll keep you busy for a while.
6. The Food Startups Podcast
While The Food Startups Podcast appears to have stopped publishing new episodes as of December 24th, 2019, it remains an incredibly important resource for restaurant start-ups.
If you’ve just got underway or are planning the opening of a new food-based business, digging into the archives of Hema Reddy’s podcast is a must. You’ll find out everything from how to pour your passion into the business to the importance of collaboration.
Enjoy listening!
Whether you choose to listen during your daily dog walk, gym session or drive to the restaurant, the podcasts above will help you keep abreast of everything that matters in the sector.
At the time of writing, the industry has been significantly impacted by the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus). We therefore hope that the content you’ll find in these podcasts offers some respite and a chance to escape the realities of the current situation.
